A set of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium (the tissues that surround and support the teeth). It involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and unlike Gingivitis, it is irreversible.

Why It Matters

It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Chronic inflammation from periodontitis is also linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
