A pathologically deepened gingival sulcus (the space between tooth and gum). Healthy pockets are 1-3mm deep. Pockets 4mm or deeper indicate gum disease and loss of attachment.

Why It Matters

Pockets >4mm are impossible to clean with a toothbrush or floss. Bacteria accumulate at the bottom, eating away the bone. Professional deep cleaning is required to reduce them.
