The hard, yellow tissue located beneath the enamel and cementum. It makes up the bulk of the tooth structure and surrounds the pulp.

Why It Matters

Dentin gives teeth their natural yellow/white hue (enamel is clear). It contains microscopic tubes ("tubules") leading directly to the nerve. If enamel wears off and exposes dentin, you feel sharp pain when eating hot, cold, or sweet foods.

• Regeneration: Unlike enamel, dentin can repair itself slightly (Secondary Dentin) in response to trauma.
