The soft, living tissue located in the center of the tooth (pulp chamber) and canals. It contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
It is responsible for forming the tooth (dentinogenesis). In adults, it provides hydration and sensation (hot/cold). If the pulp dies (necrosis) due to deep decay, the tooth needs a root canal.
