A pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation of the connective tissue and progressive loss of supporting bone. It is essentially "gum disease for implants."
Implants are not invulnerable. If plaque accumulates, this infection can destroy the bone holding the implant, causing it to loosen and fall out. It is often painless until advanced stages.
