Retainer

A custom-made orthodontic appliance designed to hold teeth in their new positions after braces or aligners are removed.

Why It Matters

The bone around moved teeth takes months to fully harden (calcify). Without a retainer, the elastic fibers in the gums will pull teeth back to their original crooked spots (Relapse).

• Types: Essix (clear plastic), Hawley (wire and acrylic), Bonded (permanent wire behind teeth).
