Periodontal Ligament

A group of specialized connective tissue fibers that attach a tooth to the alveolar bone within which it sits. It acts as a hammock, suspending the tooth in the socket.

Why It Matters

The PDL has nerve endings (proprioceptors) that tell your brain how hard you are biting. This protects teeth from fracture. Dental implants do not have a PDL, which gives them a different, "solid" feel.
