Molars

The large, flat teeth located at the back of the mouth. They have broad chewing surfaces (occlusal tables) with 4-5 cusps designed to crush and grind food before swallowing.

Why It Matters

They exert the most force of any teeth (up to 200 lbs of pressure). Loss of molars severely impacts nutrition and causes the cheeks to sink in.

A complete adult set has 12 molars (3 in each quadrant):

First Molars (erupt at age 6).

Second Molars (erupt at age 12).

Third Molars (Wisdom Teeth, erupt age 17-25).
