Enamel

The highly mineralized outer layer of the tooth crown. It is the hardest substance in the human body, designed to protect the softer underlying tissues (dentin and pulp) from physical and chemical damage.

Why It Matters

Enamel contains no living cells, meaning it cannot regenerate. Once enamel is lost to decay or erosion (from acid), it is gone forever and must be repaired artificially (fillings/crowns).
